SERVICE - Workforce planning

The rigour that turns a workforce strategy into a workforce plan

A strategy sets direction. A plan gives you a way to steer. We build integrated workforce plans across acute, community, primary care, mental health and social care, built on rigorous demand and supply modelling and grounded in the financial envelope you actually have.

What we do

What we do

  • Demand and supply modelling - quantitative modelling across professions, services and time horizons.
  • Integrated workforce plans - joined-up plans across settings, aligned to service and financial plans.
  • Productivity and skill-mix analysis - evidence-based options for delivering more with the workforce you can realistically build.
  • Workforce risk and resilience modelling - scenario planning, contingency options and a clear-eyed view of exposure.
  • Long-range population and workforce forecasting - ten and twenty year forecasts to underpin business cases, capital programmes and system plans.
  • Planning cycle design - the annual planning rhythm, the templates and the governance that turn planning from a project into business as usual.
How we work

How we work

We build models to be handed over. Where we build tools, we leave them with your team. Where we develop methods, we document them clearly enough that your internal analysts can repeat them.

We show our workings. We explain how the model behaves under different assumptions and flag the ones that are heroic. Modelling the executive cannot interrogate is not useful modelling.

We make plans that connect to the pay envelope. Workforce plans that ignore Total Employee Cost do not survive contact with the finance director; ours do.

What to expect

What you can expect from us

  • A senior planning lead with real modelling experience, supported by analysts, clinical advisers and finance specialists.
  • Plain English, including in the technical work.
  • Defensible numbers, with a sensitivity view attached.
  • A planning product that flows straight into delivery, not one that has to be re-worked to be used.
Engagements

Typical engagements

  • A three-month integrated workforce plan for a large acute trust.
  • A scenario-based supply and demand model for a mental health provider over a ten-year horizon.
  • A twenty-year population health demand and workforce forecast underpinning a new hospital business case.
  • Design and embedding of an annual workforce planning cycle into an ICB.
