Board-level strategic thinking for population health leaders
Population health is a leadership discipline as much as an analytic one. Directors, ICB executive teams, place-based partnership boards and Directors of Public Health all need clear thinking about how population health fits into the wider strategy of their organisation. That's what this service provides.
What we do
- Population health strategy - organisation- or system-level strategies that place population health at the heart of the wider service, workforce and finance strategy.
- Operating model for population health functions - how the ICB, place or provider population health team should be structured, resourced and integrated.
- Independent strategic reviews - board-commissioned reviews of population health functions, strategies or programmes.
- Board and executive team development - helping boards understand and lead in population health, without turning them into epidemiologists.
- Advisory retainers - a senior population health advisor on call to chief executives, Directors of Public Health and system leaders.
- Pre-business-case strategic thinking - the upstream population health work that makes a business case credible.
How we work
Strategy is only useful if it changes decisions. Our population health strategy work is calibrated for the specific decisions the client organisation needs to make in the next 12 to 24 months - not for a five-year vision document.
We work in partnership with clinical leaders, particularly Directors of Public Health and Chief Medical Officers, where their leadership is central to the strategy landing.
Where strategy needs to link to workforce, or become a delivery programme, our workforce and transformation practices are already alongside - under a single client relationship.
What you can expect from us
- A senior advisor with real system-level experience - Chief Medical Officer, Director of Public Health, or executive equivalent.
- Strategy expressed in operational language that a chief operating officer can act on.
- Honesty about the constraints and trade-offs; no glossy strategies detached from delivery.
- A short, actionable board-ready product - not a 200-slide deck.
Typical engagements
- A population health strategy for an ICB, linked to the joint forward plan.
- An operating model for a place-based population health function.
- An independent review of a stalled PHM programme.
- A strategic advisory retainer to a Director of Public Health through a system reorganisation.
